Program Coordinator
Position Title: Program Coordinator, N.C. Disaster Survival and Resiliency School
Organization: Southern Vision Alliance (SVA)
Status: Six-month, part-time (20 hours per week) contracted position with review and potential to hold the position based on funds available.
Pay rate: Pay rate will be $30/hour for up to 20 hours a week. No additional benefits.
Summary:
The Coordinator of the NC Disaster Survival and Resiliency School will manage and organize one of SVA’s newest programs. The coordinator will:
(1) Support local, regional, and statewide disaster community organizing in communities impacted by climate disasters, including hurricanes, droughts, flooding, heat stress, and forest fires; and
(2) Engage impacted community leaders and grassroots organizations with statewide partners in developing and implementing system change campaigns in NC’s disaster response system that create a more empowering, just, and equitable approach to disaster preparedness, relief, recovery, and resiliency.
A central focus of the Disaster Survival School is to engage and support BIPOC communities in disaster community organizing on the local level and to create an organized voice and vessel for statewide systems change. Major components of the School will include a virtual, statewide meeting on a weekly basis, online resources, and education and training workshops and programs.
In the present disaster response system, impacted residents are treated as individual clients and recipients of services, with little or no power to impact the direction, speed, and quality of the recovery process. The Survival School is based on the principle that community residents impacted by disaster need to lead the long-term redevelopment, recovery, and resiliency efforts in their communities, in partnership with public and private agencies and programs. The School’s objective is to facilitate the empowerment of residents in disaster-impacted communities to claim a central role in decision-making, visioning, planning, and implementing community-based and statewide efforts.
The Disaster Survival School is directed by an established Advisory Board that will oversee and provide support and guidance to this position. Both the Advisory Board and the staff and Board of SVA will provide strong support and resources to the Program Coordinator. Visit our website at www.ncsurvivalschool.com.
